What’s Your Real Reason for Being in Business?
Last week I had the honor of speaking with Annemarie Cross on her podcast Ambitious Entrepreneur. Annemarie Cross is a coach specializing in both personal branding and social media strategies and money mindset breakthroughs.
The subject we talked about was the three motivations behind starting a business. These motivations are behind the “style” of business they create.
These styles are . . .
- Empire Builders
- Freedom Lovers
- Altruistic Visionaries

How to Get Project Momentum
Today I am sharing this great video I ran across on how to complete those pesky projects you have started. You know the half written books, the videos you started to create, the marketing plan you planned to write, etc. It’s a quick tip I thought a lot of my associates and clients would love to learn.
Funny fact, I was pruning my tomato plants this morning right before I watched this video by Scott Behance, author of Making Ideas Happen: Overcoming the Obstacles Between Vision and Reality suggested. (Affiliate link)
Now it’s time for me to start pruning all those pesky, “darling” projects.
What did you think? Did it motivate you to get started on your big, career changing project? Leave me a comment and tell me what you’ll be working on! (Or will be after commenting.)
Allowing Space for Your Life’s Work
In my last post I wrote about crafting your life’s work. The article was written to awaken readers that have a strong sense their careers were meant to make a lasting impression. A comment on that post from Suerae Stein prompted me to write a follow up article on what to do if you are not ready yet to launch a career path aimed at fulfilling your life’s work.
Maybe you are in one of the following situations:
- You don’t know what your life’s mission (purpose) is yet.
- You are committed to another job for a certain time that doesn’t relate to your life’s mission.
- You are not financial able to start your own business or current job.
- You already own a business that doesn’t relate to your core mission but are financial dependent on the income it produces.
- You have small children at home and don’t have as much time as you would like to devote to your life’s work.
It’s OK. The best thing is to start where you are now. Here’s some ideas to get you moving in the right direction. Most of these ideas are low or no cost and won’t take a tremendous amount of time.
- Know what your life mission is and outline ways to achieve that mission. This can take a bit of soul searching and/or coaching to discover.
- Downscale your lifestyle so you can begin sooner. Analyze how you can cut back and save money.
- Take classes and/or become certified in your profession,
- Start a blog about the topic you are interested in making a difference. Plan on writing at least once a week and start getting your blog some exposure.
- If you haven’t yet, start a Twitter account and Facebook account in your name. Post information, articles and promote your blog posts relating to your life’s work. This will establish you as expert in your given topic.
- Begin networking with people in your field.
The most important thing is to get started.
“The maxim ‘Nothing but perfection’ may be spelled ‘Paralysis.” Winston Churchill
Your career may evolve into something you never imagined but unless you start somewhere, with a goal in mind, nothing will ever happen. Make a commitment to create the career/business of your dreams. Considering how many years are spent working wouldn’t you love to do something you are proud of and love doing?
Do you have any other ideas on what you can do to get started? Please leave a comment below.
Why You Don’t Have Your Dream Business Yet
I know what you’ve been saying to yourself. You know, why you’re about to fall asleep, feeling grief gripping your heart like a vice. You’re saying things like “Why am I not where I should be in my business” or “I should have fill in the blank by now.”
Want to know what’s stopping you from your dream business? You haven’t taken the time to heal and reflect on what’s stopping you. Your soul is protecting you from moving forward until you are ready. Resisting the urge to slow down and reflect how you got to this point in your life builds up a wall of resistance. Everything you do seems to be like wadding through mud.
Like the ocean, life has its ebb and flows. When the tide goes out and you feel abandoned by the sea, float for a while until the tide comes in. Relax. Ground yourself. Take the time to boost-your self-esteem. When it’s time to move forward again you will feel refreshed and energized, not weary and frightened.
Do You Have Too Many Business Ideas?
Some of us were born with the need to explore. We want to experience life at it’s fullest so we go full speed ahead and pursue all the wonderful things to do and learn. On the downside, we may have so many ideas, passions and interests it leaves us feeling scattered and unfocused.
I have felt this way. My passion is learning. I’m one of those people who love to learn and wants to learn as much as I can about a topic that interest me. I sometimes learn several topics at once or go deep into learning one subject. When it came to my I ended up choosing a topic that I’ve never dropped and that’s career and start up business ideas. I’ve been researching this topic for 26 years. But for a while, I became lost in a sea of options. I just knew each topic I became interested in was the one I was meant to pursue as a career.
In desperation I turned to a book called The Renaissance Soul by Margaret Lobenstine. She offers many great tips on managing your interests but the best part of the book is that it helps to boost your self-esteem. In a culture that favors being a specialist she gives us reassurance that not only are we OK the way we are but that we can actually thrive having so many interests.
My personal tip is when it comes to starting a successful, income-producing business I recommend focusing your efforts on one idea. Narrow down your ideas to one that you feel will create the income you desire. Then start an idea file for the business ideas you may want to do in the future. Better yet, get a journal and write down your ideas and what you love about it. When you’ve launched a business or career successfully consult your journal and see if any these ideas spark an idea for another business or ones that can become hobbies.
The Renaissance Soul is a great book to check out for managing all your passion.
